The movie Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is the sequel to Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and based on Helen Fielding’s novel. But in this movie, there are significant differences in the story lines both between the novel and the film , and between the U.S. and U.K. versions of the film.
As in the previous movie, Renée Zellweger is in the role of Bridget Jones, Colin Firth is Mark Darcy and Hugh Grant is Daniel Cleaver. And as in the previous movie, there are plenty of embarrassing situations and romantic misunderstandings.
The movie begins when Bridget and Mark have been in their relationsship for few weeks, and Bridget is ecstatic. But Bridget is still very inconfident about herself, and when she meets Mark’s colleague, the young and beutiful Rebecca Gilles (Jacinda Barrett) she starts to doubt their relationship.
When Mark asks Bridget to the “Law Council Dinner”, she becomes delighted and assumes that Mark might propose to her that night. Nevertheless, the dinner doesn’t turn out the way Bridget was hoping for and Mark spends the majority of the evening with Rebecca and other work colleagues, leaving Bridget by herself.
After the “Law Council Dinner”, Bridget is crushed that Mark didn’t propose and they argue about Bridget not fitting in with Mark’s friends. Later Mark apologizes, and invites Bridget on a ski holiday. However, in the beginning of the holiday, Bridget learns that it was Rebecca that recommended the vacation spot to Mark, and that her and all his work colleagues are on the holiday as well.
And Bridget’s confidence does not change for the better after returning home from the holiday. At lunch with both of Bridget’s and Mark’s parents, the subject of marriage comes up and Mark quickly answers that marriage is something that they aren’t even thinking about yet. His quick answer hurts the fragile Bridget even more and she is afraid Mark is cheating on her with Rebecca. Mark is offended that Bridget doubts him and finally she breaks up with him.
Meanwhile, Bridget’s ex-boyfriend Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) is back offering Bridget job as the “Smooth Guidess” for Sit-Up Britain. Bridget accepts the offer and decides to go with Daniel to Thailand to film “The Smooth Guide.” Bridget and Daniel begin to flirt again in the plane, and Bridget is about to give him a second chance at the hotel when a prostitute enters.
Bridget who had brought her friend Shazzer along to Thailand for her support, packs along with Shazzer in a hurry to catch the plane back to the U.K. In the rush, Bridget packs Shazzer’s gift from Jed who was Shazzer’s holiday flirt, into her own bag, but when the dogs of airport security recognize cocaine, Bridget is in big trouble…
