The movie Cold Mountain was filmed in Romania and begins with a recreation of the Battle of the Crater which took place in 1864 at the American Civil War. Jude Law plays W. P. Inman, a Confederate soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia. Inman meets Ada (Nicole Kidman) and they fall in love but in at an early stage of their relationship, Inman must leave to the war.
Inman fights in many battles and experiences losses of friends, and finally gets a battle wound himself. As Inman is recovering in a hospital, he decides to turn back to his home on Cold Mountain, North Carolina, and to the woman he loves.
Ada is a city woman who recently moved to a rural farm named Black Cove along with her father. Shortly after they arrive, her father dies, leaving her alone on the farm and since all the young men are off at war, Ada is left with little prospect for help.
Ada who was raised to become a southern lady, has no experience in working at the farm and is struggling to survive after her fathers death. Ava is destitute when one of her neighbour sends Ruby Thewes (Renée Zellweger) to her. Ruby is a young woman who has lived a hard-scrabble life and is very adept at the tasks needed to run the farm.
The two women form a close friendship and together they manage to save the farm. They also are friends with the Swangers who live down the road from Black Cove and at the Swanger’s well, Ada “sees” a vision of Inman coming back to her in the snow along with a flock of crows.
During the war, Ada and Ruby and other community memers, have several tense encounters with men who are members of the Confederate Home Guard. Although the purpose of the Home Guard was originally to protect the citizen in the south from the North, the Guards have become violent vigilantes who hunt and kill deserters from the Confederate army and terrorize other citizens they believe are housing or helping the deserters. And by deciding to go back home, Inman has become one …
