Leatherheads is a romantic comedy film where Zellweger plays a Chicago newspaper reporter who wants to uncover an American footballs team hero.
George Clooney plays Jimmy “Dodge” Connelly, captain of a professional American football team during the 1920s, the Duluth Bulldogs. The football team is struggling and Dodge is determined to save both his team and pro football in general. In order to do so, he convinces a college football star and a war hero, Carter “the Bullet” Rutherford, to join the team.
Carter (John Krasinski) has former fame as a decorated hero of the First World War, for singlehandedly capturing a large group of German soldiers. In addition to his legendary tales of combat heroism, Carter has dashing good looks and unparalleled speed and skill on the field. As a result of his presence, both the Bulldogs and pro football in general begin to prosper.
Lexie Littleton (Zellweger) is the newswoman who becomes a romantic interest of both Dodge and Carter. She makes a deal with her editor about becoming the assistant editor if she uncovers Carters heroics and finds out that the story about his heroism is false.
At first, Lexies plot goes by the plan and Carter confesses that the surrender of the Germans was a lucky accident and in no way heroic. Lexie writes the article, but Carter denies the articles allegations publicly.
Dodge supports Lexie and the two men’s rivalry affects onto the football field when Dodge gets to play in one last big game against Carter, who has changed sides to the Chicago team.
