Watty Watts (Gil Bellows) and his fiancé Starlene (Renée Zellweger) are young couple in love and planning a robbery of a convenience store along with Watts’ drug-addict friend, Billy Mack Black (Rory Cochrane). 

The robbery plan fails and turns into a murder and the trio is now on a run  from the law. 

Heading for Mexico, they the young couples become the media favorites and along their way they meet a lot of quirky characters, including Starlene’s parents, Vergil (Peter Fonda) and Thaylene (Ann Wedgeworth).
