In the story of Nurse Betty, Renée Zellweger plays Betty Sizemore, a sweet and innocent waitress in Kansas who is a huge fan of the daytime soap opera “A Reason to Love”. For her performance as Betty, Zellweger won the Golden Globe Award as Best Actress.

Betty is one of the most thoughtful, polite and considerate person in the town, and has no idea that her husband, Del (Aaron Eckhart) is cheating on her with his secretary and selling drugs as well.

When Betty witnesses her husband being murdered by two hitman (Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock), she becomes delusional and obcessed about her favourite actor George McCord (Greg Kinnear) in the soap “A Reason to Love”. In her delusional escape from reality, Betty thinks she is a nurse and an ex-fiance of of David, the soap opera surgeon who is played by George, her favourite actor.

At the evening of Del’s murder, Betty calmly packs her suitcase seeming completely oblivious of the murder, while the sheriff, a reporter and the cops examine her home as a crime scene.

Betty plans to spend the night at her friend’s house, but in the middle of the night she drives off and to a bar in Arisona where she tells the female bartender that she is engaged to a famous surgeon named David.

Meanwhile, the two hitmen are trying to find Betty, since she unwittingly took the car with the hidden drugs they were looking for. The hitmen track Betty to Los Angeles, where she is trying to get a job as a nurse while looking for her ex-fiance. Betty is turned down at first, but when she accidentally saves a patient’s life by applying method she saw on TV, she is hired anyway.

Betty’s gentleness turns out to be just what the patients need, and she is invited to stay with Rosa (Tia Texada), who offers to help Betty find her ex-fiance. But Rosa finds out from her lawyer boss, that Betty’s fiance is a soap opera character and tries to make Betty realise that to no avail.

But then, Rosa’s boss gets an idea how to make Betty understand that Davids is a soap character. He gets tickets to a charity gala where George , the actor who is playing David, is making an appearance and the idea is to let Betty meet him there.

At first George dismisses Betty, but something about her brings him to continue talking to her and at some point he thinks she is an actress who is determined to get a part in the soap opera. And as a result, Betty gets a role in the soap as nurse Betty…
