Jimmie Shannon (Chris O’Donnell) is a bachelor, who likes to be one. But when his fiancee, Anne (Renée Zellweger) catches the wedding bouquet in one of his friend wedding, he finally decides to propose to her. Jimmy chooses one of the most romantic restaurant in town to propose, but manage to spoil the special moment and Anne turns down his proposal.
Anne is going to Greece for an assignment when Jimmie discovers that his grandfather James Shannon (Peter Ustinov) has left him the family business, all his assets and $100 million. But The inheritance has a restrictive covenant. Jimmie must be a married by 6:05 p.m. on his 30th birthday, which happens to be the next day.
Which means that Jimmie must get married in a hurry. He proposes to Anne again, but manage to screw up the second time, so Anne turn down his proposal again and leaves for the assignement in Greece.
Along with his friend Marco (Artie Lange), a priest waiting (James Cromwell), and his grandfather’s two friends and colleagues (Edward Asner and Hal Holbrook), Jimmie desperately tries to find a bride within few hours.
The search starts with Jimmie’s ex-girlfriends but no one is interested. Finally one woman accepts his offer, the money rapacious Buckley (Brooke Shields) who wants the money for her family’s business. However, it turns out that Jimmie’s grandfather also added an additional clause in the will. A clause that says the married couple must have children within 5 years, spend only one night apart a month and that they need to be married for at least ten years. And when Buckley realises that, she turns down the offer.
Becoming more desperate, Marco decides to try a different tactic He puts out an ad in the newspaper with drastic consequences…
